Spring break was a time when students swapped their books and pencils for lounging on beaches by day and hitting clubs by night. Some students at College of Southern Nevada traveled from campus to far-flung places.
“I was laid back on the beach holding an ice-cold drink in my hand,” said Karen Cano, CSN student. “It is tradition for me to spend every spring break in Miami. My favorite thing about spring breaking in Miami is the tropical climate, its amazing food and I always try my best to make it to a music festival.”
According to Travel Agent Central, a website that reviews travel destinations, “Over 53 percent of people aged 18 to 34 planned to travel for spring break this year. According to a new joint study from travel websites such as TripAdvisor, Viator and Offers.com, Rome, Paris and Las Vegas top the list for most popular destinations in 2018.”
CSN student Beverly Beckworth said, “This spring break I played tourist while staying in Las Vegas. I went to two different beach clubs and I even stayed overnight at the Wynn.”
“Spring break is my time to forget about school and enjoy me some piña coladas while I get my tan on,” Beckworth said. “I always dread the last few days before spring break ends because reality hits again.”
Some key findings from Travel Agent Central showed the average millennial spent $369.63 on spring-break travel. Most 18-to-34-years-old spring breakers spent 35 percent of their time relaxing, 23 percent studying, 18 percent on outdoor activities and 15 percent went home to visit their families.
Spring break generates billions on domestic and international travel. According to U.S. News and World Report, which provides sophisticated analyses, there are multiple cities that make up the top spring-break destinations: Cancun, Miami, South Padre Island, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Rico, Punta Cana, Jamaica and Panama City Beach.
Each destination is filled with beaches, bars and booze. For many students spring break is the perfect time to release some stress but for a destination to be spring-break worthy, it has to be affordable, accessible and popular amongst college students, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Victoria Martinez, CSN student, stated, “Cancun has been calling my name since last spring break; I like to say ‘What happens in Cancun, stays in Cancun’. This spring break in Cancun I went to check out the Mayan ruins and the Isla Mujeres, which translates to the island of women.”
CSN student Daijha Walls said, “Jamaica is where I spend almost every spring break. I get to visit my family there also, which makes it that much more special. Jamaica is always full of college students, so I usually go alone and make friends while there. It’s the perfect place to make new friends.” Walls wishes to one day move to Jamaica so that she doesn’t have to reminisce spring break.
Not all students went away for the week.
“My spring break was spent working lots of overtime,” said CSN student Angelica Camacho. “I work at a beach club so I technically still get to party with all the spring breakers, without the alcohol of course. Although I do not get to enjoy my spring break as much as other students, I make tons of tips at work during spring break, so it’s worth it.”
