Rehearsal and perfomances happen in the BackStage Theatre

The College of Southern Nevada’s Department of Fine Arts presents the Tony-Award-winning stage play, “Art.” The department will hold its first performance on Oct. 12, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., in the BackStage Theatre. The play was originally written by Yasmina Reza and translated into English by Christopher Hampton.
“Art” is centered around three characters: Serge, Marc and Yvan. It was originally set in France. The three characters will be played by students from the Department of Fine Arts. Serge buys a white painting and shows it to his friend, Marc. Marc is convinced that this painting is not ideal, especially for the amount of money Serge spent on it. Serge seeks out their mutual friend, Yvan, for a third perspective. The play goes on with mature dialogue, silly antics, and comical disputes about the painting.
In 1998, “Art” won a Tony Award for best play with its performance at the Royale Theatre in New York City. The play was produced by David Pugh, Sean Connery and Joan Cullman, and the cast included Alan Alda, Victor Garber and Alfred Molina.
The French playwright and novelist Yasmina Reza also wrote “God of Carnage” (2008), which won the Oliver Award in London for best new comedy in 2009. The play had an awesome cast with stars like Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and James Gandolfini.
You can see the Department of Fine Art’s rendition of “Art,” at the BackStage Theatre, located in CSN’s Cheyenne Campus. The first of six performances will take place on Oct. 12, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Additional performances are scheduled for: October 13, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m.; and October 14, and 21 at 4:00 p.m. General admission is $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.
