College of Southern Nevada changed the name of its tutoring services to the Centers for Academic Success and is offering unlimited tutoring for all students.
Shellie Keller, director of Centers for Academic Success, said the name change was meant to signify that various academic tutoring programs now sit under one center at the College instead of parsed out in different departments.
“We wanted to create a more cohesive group while working on this common mission to help the students become independent learners, and help complete courses and achieve their overall academic goals,” Keller said.
Students, who are currently enrolled at CSN, can receive unlimited tutoring. One-on-one sessions can help students better understand their course concepts, complete their homework and study for exams.
“We wanted to create these centers for students and provide individualized attention that students do not normally receive in regular classroom instruction,” Keller said.
“It’s great that the name has changed to Centers for Academic Success because it really reflects what we strive for at every center,” said Antonio Martinez, CSN tutor. Tutors are working hard to helps students.
According to data from the Centers, 8,995 students attended one-on-one tutoring sessions in spring 2015. This is a 23 percent increase compared to same term last year.
Tutoring is offered in math, science, accounting, communication, computers, writing and reading. Students can work on computer software, rehearse speeches in the whisper room, an enclosed studio that will record speeches for analysis, and prepare for math placement tests in the Math Resource Center. All of these labs and centers have seen increase in student participation in the past year.
“The tutors at the Centers for Academic Success help us students get a better understanding of the lectures,” said Norma Mellendez, CSN student. “They are very patient and can go step-by-step on each math problem.”
“It is very rewarding for us tutors,” said Joe Hicks, specialist at Charleston Writing Center. “The success of a student can be measured in many different ways but for some students it may be achieving a grade to get into a specific program, graduating, or being able to transfer to a top-level school, for others it may be for passing a class or exam.”
Students can drop-in for tutoring sessions or make an appointment for a more concentrated study hour. Services are offered on all three campuses throughout the week. For more information please visit http://www.csn.edu/pages/1902.asp.
