College of Southern Nevada’s new CSN Streamin’ Radio station provides students opportunities to train in broadcasting while entertaining listeners around the clock.
“Students can hear a variety of music covering all formats: today’s top-40 hits, ‘80s, ‘90s, millennial music, classic rock, alternative rock, country, R&B and jazz,” said Andrew Kolb, CSN radio lab coordinator.
The station streams 24-hours a day online. Recently live broadcasts at college-wide events, including baseball games, have been added.
“I love the variety of music that the station plays,” said Stephanie Lyte, who took the radio-production course, interned and was hired as a production assistant at the station. “There is diverse music for our diverse campus.”
“I love listening to our campus radio station,” said Suddenly Crosby, CSN student. “I can always find out what happening on campus and there is music for every mood I’m in.”
There are three production courses geared to train students for industry jobs in CSN’s Journalism and Media Studies program. One of which is JOUR 121 Radio Production that Kolb teaches.
Kolb instructs students to edit music, write, record public-service announcements and conduct radio interviews. He does this by applying his years of experience to his teaching. “I am now a 34-year-radio veteran. I have spent the last 27 years on air in Las Vegas,” Kolb said.
“Students learn the basics of radio in the radio production course. After completion… students have the opportunity to intern at CSN Streamin’ Radio where they can expand on their skills,” Kolb said.
Kim Trejo, student intern at the station, said, “I like that [Kolb] teaches a lot of different things, not just writing PSA’s or doing the production side. I like that he has a lot of experience in the field and if I have any questions he is always very knowledgeable.”
“I learn best by hands-on experience and being here affords me that opportunity,” Lyte said. “Radio is changing every day so does how we listen to radio. The hands-on experience here not only allows me to learn my craft but it also teaches me how to adapt and grow as technology in this field grows.”
