Spring semester is coming to a close and help-wanted signs are being put in windows for summer jobs. The Career Services Center at the College of Southern Nevada can assist students in finding great positions.
The Center offers helpful workshops including resume writing and critiquing, in addition to coordinating students with internships, volunteer opportunities and jobs.
Students can take computerized assessments and personality tests in the Center to help them narrow the field in their job searches. TypeFocus is an assessment tool used to provide an analysis that captures students’ natural abilities, passions and interests. It can help students see what they love to do and what kind of path would suit them.
“One of the first things to do when looking for work is to decide what kind of work to look for,” said Erica O’Toole, career specialist at CSN. “This website will help you do that through three career assessments. The payoff is that you will find work that will be a good fit for your personality, interests and values.”
“There are career service centers at each of the main campuses,” O’Toole said. “We offer career exploration and job-search assistance to students and alumni.”
“It’s been nothing but stress trying to find internships and jobs,” said Joseph Singletary, a CSN business major. “I don’t know where to look or who to talk to.” Singletary is graduating this spring and explains how finding a job when school is over has not been as easy as he thought.
“I’m actually just trying to find a summer job or internship to keep me busy during the break,” said Katie Schenk, CSN journalism major. “I always need to find something to keep my attention or else I just sit at home and do nothing. Having an internship towards my degree would be ideal.”
Michele Fogg, an internship advisor at CSN, explained that students can go through a list of internships that the school already set up or they can arrange their own with approvals.
“It’s up to the student to apply for the internship themselves,” Fogg said. Students must meet criteria, submit their resumes, go through the interview process and be accepted.
