Food on campus will now be offered by Campus Food Service as Sodexo cancels its contract and departs October 31, 2012.
Campus Food Service’s contract is effective November 1. Most food service areas will be operational on November 5.
According to Danny Jensen, president for Campus Food Service, the company will subcontract restaurants on campus including Hogi Yogi and Maria’s Taco Shop.
Sodexo, the former food vendor, had a five-year contract with the College. It recently elected to cancel the contract short and exit.
Campus Food Service was once a food provider on campus.
Daniel Morris, executive director of business operations at CSN, said, “Campus Food Service approached the College once it learned that Sodexo was cancelling its contract with the College. We knew that Campus Food Service knew our students and knew how to provide the best possible options and services.”
Sodexo’s departure was simply a business decision according to the company.
Paul Haus, district manager of Sodexo, explained that food prices went up as students spent less on food on campus, which was a difficult financial equation for his company.
The separation between Sodexo and CSN brings about many changes.
Luty Verdugo, who worked at the Sodexo location on Charleston’s campus for three years, said it is a bittersweet change for him. “My time is up here, it will be a new beginning for me. I’m transferring to Mountain View Hospital, so I will remain a Sodexo employee, but I’ll definitely miss CSN and all the friends that I have made.”
Students at CSN are not opposed to the change. Tennile Hyde, CSN sophomore, said, “I would like this new company to be affordable. It can get pretty expensive to eat on campus.”
Tasha Magna, student at CSN, added, “I want and expect the new foods that will be provided to us to be healthier.”
