CSN’s Department of Fine Arts began its musical-performance series for the 2012-2013 academic year with the Music Scholarship Concert.
The evening began with an introduction by department chair Dr. Richard McGee, who gave a brief history of the Joe Williams Music Scholarship Fund.
The concert held at the Nicholas J. Horn Theatre had a variety of performances. The Calypso Coyote Steel Drum Band showed off its rhythmic sounds and the Concert Band rocked the room. The performances showcased the talent of many CSN students.
Elisa Yazzie and Thomas Domschot, both performed at the benefit, know firsthand about the work and dedication that goes into performing.
“Since it’s a small program they push us a lot because they really get to know us,” says Yazzie, who plays alto saxophone in the Concert Band.
Domschot, who is a guitar player for the Wednesday Night Jazz Band, knows how competitive it can be.
“CSN is like a small town and maybe your one of the top players here. But if you go to UNLV, it’s like the big city. There is a lot more players that are on par with you, probably better, so you have to work harder,” Domschot says.
Since its foundation in 1989 the Joe Williams Music Scholarship fund has raised over $500,000. The fund has grown alongside the music program and assists 30 to 50 talented students each semester.
