Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society at the College of Southern Nevada, seeks more students to join its already 1,000 member club.
“I would say that you learn so much,” said Aurelio Herrera, president of Phi Theta Kappa. “Not only do you grow academically but also as an individual.”
According to Bruno Rhodes, Phi Theta Kappa’s advisor, PTK strives to achieve the goals outlined in its mission statement including: recognizing and encouraging the academic achievements of its college students and providing opportunities for individual growth.
“To join, a student must have completed 12 college-level courses and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5,” Rhodes said. Students have to pay a one-time fee of $90. This fee goes to headquarters, the Nevada/California Region and to the local chapter for operational costs.
Students receive many different benefits from joining PTK such as having access to $37 million in scholarships. Students are also able to develop professionally through a program called Competitive Edge.
“My best memory of being with Phi Theta Kappa would be when we went to the regional convention with my chapter,” said Antonio Guerrero, Phi Theta Kappa member for two years. “It was really nice because we really felt like a team.”
Members receive a pin, a certificate of membership and wear special regalia at the commencement ceremony.
Members can participate in three levels of PTK including: chapter, regional and international levels. CSN’s PTK has members that participate in all three levels.

“I hope that members continue to strive for excellence throughout their academic career as well as their professional and personal lives,” Rhodes said.
